Carlo, papa and patriarch of the Bugatti design family, got around to design by accident. Trained from his youth in the fine arts -- as a sculptor and painter at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Milan, as well as at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris -- he embarked on his furniture-designing career because of his sister. For her wedding, in 1880, he wanted to make something special. Bugatti rose quickly in the design world, and by 1888 he opened his own cabinet-making workshop and decorating business in Milan. By the time of his death in 1940, he had decorated estates in Britain and palaces in Istanbul, and established a dynasty of designing Bugattis.

His designs are wild, exciting, innovative, and sometimes simply just too much. The forms are asymmetrical, curvilinear, and ovoid, while the surfaces are stenciled, inlaid, bronzed, and tassled -- usually all at once. Bugatti borrowed elements from Eastern cultures and moved through Moorish, Japanese, and Middle Eastern styles with vigor. Chairs, tables, and silverware often boast abstract insect forms as adornment. His works teeter between the imaginatively tasteful and the gaudy; not surprisingly, the designer gained reknown for his extravagance and eccentricity.

One of Bugatti's most famous projects was his "Snail Room," featured in a 1902 international exposition of decorative arts in Turin. The exotic interior was just wacky enough to ensure the master artisan a place in design history. Its curvilinear "Cobra" chairs render the graceful stance of that wicked animal solely through sleekly and imaginatively crafted wood and metal.

Carlo Bugatti treated his craft as fine art, and eventually came to be thought of as one of the most innovative designers of the Art Nouveau period. It is somewhat appropriate that Bugatti began designing to celebrate the marriage of a family member -- Bugatti's passion and ingenuity would become traits passed on through his family line. His two sons, working and learning beside their father in his shop, became established craftsmen. The eldest, Ettore, designed artfully stylish automobiles and the younger, Rembrandt, became an accomplished sculptor.

General data

History

After the unmarketable Bugatti Type 41 'Royale', Bugatti made a successful comeback on the luxury market with the Type 46, first launched in 1929. The Type 46 design was quite similar to the 'Royale', but scaled down quite a bit to make it affordable to more than just the insanely rich. For example: although half the size of the 'Royale's', the Type 46 eight cylinder engine had the same stroke as its predecessor.

Ettore Bugatti had not completely given up on selling very expensive cars yet, which resulted in the Type 50 that debuted in 1931. This new Bugatti was directly derived from the Type 46 and shared many similarities. The reason for a 50% increase in retail price from the Type 46 could be found under the bonnet. The trademark single overhead camshaft, 24 valve eight cylinder engine, was replaced with a dual overhead camshaft engine.

The Type 50 was the first road-going Bugatti to be powered by the DOHC engine, with the honour of the very first ever going to the 1930 Type 51 Grand Prix racer. The engine was based on the Type 46 unit, but slightly decreased in size with a different bore and stroke. The design of the cylinder-head was directly inspired by the Miller engines Ettore Bugatti had acquired to study at the end of the 1920s. With 225 bhp available, the Type 50 engine was the most powerful production engine Ettore ever designed.

The chassis design was along the lines of the traditional Bugatti models. The steel ladder frame chassis was available with two wheelbases, the short 3.1 metre version and the longer 3.5 metre version. The long wheelbase version was dubbed Type 50T for 'Touring' and was fitted with a 200 bhp version of the DOHC engine. It was suspended all round by live axles and the drum brakes were still operated by cables. A three speed gearbox was bolted onto the transaxle. The aluminum disc-wheels fitted are one of the most characteristic Bugatti features of the day.

Although the Type 50 was intended solely for road use, Jean Bugatti convinced his father to prepare three examples for the 1931 24 Hours of Le Mans race. For the first time Bugatti had a car with a large enough engine to take on the Bentleys or 'British lorries' as Ettore referred to them. Painted in all-black to show Bugatti's discontent with the French government's refusal to sponsor the racing effort, the Type 50 racers were all withdrawn after a tire-failure on one of the team cars. One of those 24 Hour racers returned to Le Mans three more times, and even led the race for a while in the 1935 running.

The road-going Type 50s were delivered as a running chassis ready to be bodied by the coach builder of the customer's choice. Taking in account the high price of the chassis, it came as no surprise that only the finest of coach builders were commissioned to body the Type 50s. Most chassis' received coupe bodies. One of the most famous versions was the Jean Bugatti designed Profilee body style, which became inspiration for the later Ventoux body type found on the Type 57 chassis.

Production of the Type 50 lasted just three years in which 65 examples were constructed, including the three Le Mans racers. It was outsold by the Types 46 and 57 many times, which might explain why the Type 50 is one of the lesser known and written about Bugatti models. The chassis' pedigree alone should give it a more prominent position in the marque's history. Combining that with the lavish and beautiful bodies fitted, the Type 50 could be considered the finest car ever produced by Bugatti.

Introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 1933, the 3.3-litre Type 57 touring model was destined to form the basis of all future output from the Molsheim factory until war intervened in September 1939. Almost everything about it was new, contributing significantly to a more refined motor car than all earlier models of the marque. Its chassis had a longer wheel base and a wider track than the preceding Type 49. The engine was similar in basic dimensions to predecessors but was much more modern in design.

For the new Type 57 model the factory offered a choice of the Galibier four-door saloon, the Ventoux two-door coupe and the Stelvio cabriolet, although the latter was, in fact, mostly built by local coachbuilder Gangloff of Colmar. Alternatively, the cars could still be supplied in completed rolling chassis form so that their agents or clients could select their own coachbuilder to execute the construction to their own personal requirements.

It befitted the grandeur of Ettore Bugatti that he offered private motorists the same standard of equipment as his own racing team. No other major car manufacturer created such equality of opportunity for production team drivers and customers as a matter of course.

Sometimes the Patron took fairness to a degree that he later regretted. One such example was the Monaco Grand Prix in 1930: in this year, for the first time, drivers were permitted to race without a passenger on board. This gave privateer René Dreyfus the idea of filling the empty space with a 30-litre fuel tank and installing a corresponding device to allow a fuel refill without stopping. Dreyfus won the race without making a pit stop and with a lead of 21 seconds. The first five places were all claimed by Bugatti models, but Dreyfus won ahead of all the production team drivers. And the factory could have used the new, more powerful 2.3 litre engines for its own racing team, but for reasons of fairness decided to settle for engines that were the same as those used by the privateers.

The victorious Dreyfus also used different tyres and spark plugs to those of the offical Bugattis. Despite being generous at heart, Ettore Bugatti was not at all amused. When René Dreyfus came to introduce himself in Molsheim a few weeks later, the Patron refused to see him. It took two and a half years before René Dreyfus was finally accepted into the Bugatti racing team.

- Would be can be n°14 (T59/57S) Grand Prix of Comminges 1936. What is not confirmed:

Between the Grand Prix de la Marne 1936 and the Grand Prix du Comminges 1936, the regulations were amended at the request of competitors and requires that headlights, fenders and starter can be dismantled. Delahaye and Talbot see is a way to regain their competitiveness undermined by the Bugatti Type 57 G.

But the Grand Prix du Comminges, face three Talbot and to eight Delahaye, Bugatti brings two Types 59, simply equipped with atmospheric engine of Type 57 G. Reading the settlement between the lines, Bugatti only realized it would adhere to the letter, if not in mind! Delahaye and Talbot deal still claim for the principle and the organizers must use a compromise.

The race takes place in two rounds of twenty laps each. In great shape Jean-Pierre Wimille dominates the first round he wins ahead of his teammate Robert Benoist, leaving Robert Dreyfus and Talbot more than a minute. In the second round, the scenario is repeated but this time Robert Dreyfus, and Robert Benoist shall resign, leaving Jean-Pierre Wimille to win ahead of "Raph" and his private Talbot. In general, by adding the times of two runs, Wimille is the winner ahead of Talbot works car of Heldé.

For 1937 despite a precarious financial situation, Bugatti considers that the course is necessary. The races of the new Formule Sport him hope. Over the outcome of the Comminges race has shown that by using the equipment available following the withdrawal of the Type 59 Grand Prix, it may still achieve a strong performance to promote its range road. To attract the allocation of public funds whose creation has been decided, Bugatti changed its cars designed for speed formidable competing in endurance events. A Type 59 to engine 57 G views Comminges Grand Prix at the end of the 1936 season will be redesigned for the Sport formula that takes its essort in France. This is what is known as the chassis number #57248 that will delight of Jean-Pierre Wimille and Bugatti in the 1937 season.

Chassis 54201: assembled engine n∞ 1, it was sold in April 1932 to the Swiss dealer Bucar of Zürich. Later the car was bought by Czechoslovakian Prince Lobkowitz who driving it found his death on the Avus circuit, on 05/22/1932.
Actually the 54201 was restored like a roadster and it's in Europe.

Chassis 54202: assembled engine n∞ 14, it was sold in the march 1932 to the French driver Marcel Lehoux.
IT'S MISSING.

Chassis 54203: assembled engine n∞ 2, it was sold in the January 1932 to Kaye Don who drove it in a lot of races without great successful.
Actually it's in England.

Chassis 54204: assembled engine n∞ 3, it was sold in the January 1932 to J. P. Wimille. It was given back some time later. The engine was converted to a type 50 T engine.

Chassis 54205: assembled engine n∞ 5, it was sold in the April 1932 to Earl Howe who drove it in the 1932/33 season.
Actually the 54205 is in the U.S.A and it was completely restored. It hasn't a race car aspect because in the second half of the '30 it was modified by an English craftsman that give it a body very similar to a 55 roadster.

Chassis 54206: assembled engine n∞ 4, it was sold to the Swiss dealer Bucar of Zürich. It was returned to Molsheim dismantled. The engine was converted to a type 50 T engine.

Chassis 54207: assembled engine n∞ 6. This car was destinated to Sir Henry Birkin who, we don't know the reason, didn't recall it. The engine was converted to type 50 T engine.

Chassis 54208: assembled engine n∞ 9 and it was, in the 1932/33 season, Bugatti official race car. Later the engine was assembled on a laboratory car, and the chassis become a Type 59. (59123?)

Chassis 54209: assembled engine n∞ 8, it was sold to Count Stanislav Czaykowski who driving it established the new record of the hour on the Avus circuit.
In 1933 Count Czaykowski found his dead in 54209 on the Monza circuit (you understand why Type 54 is considered a "lethal car").
Actually the car is the best 54 arrived to our days.
----

Ettore Bugatti developed a special car for Le Mans 1937. He had only one objective: Win the race. The result was a streamlined car, with plenty of power and durability. Le Mans Miniatures made a very, very nice model, which leaves only little to desire. (more on that later). The body shape is perfect, the photo etch grille is a work of art on it's own. And behind the grill you will find the 3rd headlight. The wheels are so nice, that I bought a second set of wheels (they are sold seperately as well) to replace the wheels of the Bugatti type 59 by Will's Finecast.

So what leaves to be desired? There is no opening hood, and no engine! At least one model builder solved this by making a new hood and engine, which can be seen in one of the photos.

All in all a great kit, which makes for an eyecatcher in your collection.
